Genghis Khan’s leadership style is more towards autocratic where he controls the final decision. He has many subordinates who will provide him help with ideas as well as men power. He is a leader who has knowledge and wisdom. He would listen and think critically on what strategy he will use and what ideas he will adapt. He is a man who keeps his word, which made people believe and worship him. He might be a cruel autocratic leader who will do anything to reach his goal, but he would rarely force his own subordinate to do a certain task. He would rather reason with his own subordinate to understand more about other’s point of view and evaluate for a better solution. The reason being he believes that he should care for his people and subordinates, he would want one to respect and worship and work willingly him instead of being controlled by fear and force.
Leadership plays the most important role out of all the quality a leader has. Leadership style reflects on a leader’s mindset and personality, not only will it affect how one will recruit and train his/her people, but it will also decide what motivations will be used, the organizational structure and the working culture. The leader’s image will affect the people’s feel and thoughts for the underlings who are working for him/her. By having a good image for example, the underlings would be high spirited and motivated, where on the other hand, if the leader has a bad image, the outcome would be opposite. Genghis Khan’s underlings all swore to be loyal not out of force, but willingly. Each one of them put their lives on the line to fight for their leader’s vision. The people believe in their leader, showing how motivated they are and how much faith and trust they put in their leader.
Autocratic leadership style was the main leadership style back then. There was no democratic and freedom. But as an autocratic leader, Genghis Khan would sit back and listen to other’s idea, respect others point of view and critically use these different ideas to provide a solution that others would be able to accept. As an autocratic leader, he has the right to deny other’s point of view and only follow what he believes. But he decides to gain other’s acknowledgement, approval and opinions before he makes a decision.
